Posted 5/5/2002: If you've ever wondered about the origin of the word "pipilo" here it is. This is the rufous-sided towhee, and pipilo is its genus. The latin name is Pipilo erythrophthalmus. Three or four varieties of towhee inhabit the western U.S.
