Our neighborhood has the same name as this salt marsh, the Penasquitos Lagoon. The lagoon leads from Torrey Pines beach into Penasquitos Canyon, one of San Diego's great city parks. The park is used by joggers, bike riders, horseback riders, and walkers. Unfortunately, the hillsides on the north and south sides of the canyon have been bulldozed for development as far up to the Canyon as possible. It's not quite the same, seeing houses on trapezoidal hills hovering over the canyon. Even so, there are many places in the park where you can feel alone among the live oaks, red tailed hawks, and rabbits, and coyotes.
