February 2003
Here Mike and Brett show off their glassware. Each of
them made a stirring rod and a bent tube of glass, both with polished
ends, so they don't get cut when the use the equipment later. To bend
the tube, they had to roll it with their fingers over a Bunsen burner
flame until it got soft in the middle, then bend it to a right angle.
To polish, they must hold it over the flame until the sharp ends turn
roundish and blunt. Today was our day to learn about Bunsen burners, measurements,
and significant figures - Chem 152L, Lab #2.
