16 June 2003This is the St. George Reef lighthouse. The door is at the top of the stairs on the right side of the large bottom section. We got there by helicopter from Arcada, near Humboldt Bay. Because helicopters cannot land on the island, we climbed into a basket, one by one, and were lowered onto the whitish platform at the right. When I landed, a wave splashed over the platform and sprayed me a bit. Upon ascending the stairs and breaking the lock, we were greeted by a life-sized dummy hanging by a noose just inside the door, a present left by the last keeper, who had vacated in 1975. I left a photograph of our family in a small, built-in cabinet in the light room on the 7th floor. DWL |
