Another San Diego landmark fell this week. The shoe tree at Morley Field disc golf course is gone. Scott and I got up early to play a round or two of our favorite sport this morning. We arrived at 7:45 am, paid our fees, and started up with no waiting. The course got very crowded as we progressed around the course. Scott won the first hole 3-5, thanks to my awful putting. After a pretty good drive on hole #2, we trudged up the hill to find a plaque on the ground where the shoe tree once stood. Apparently, the storms of this past weekend filled up the shoes with water, making them too heavy for the tree to support in the fierce winds. I remember seeing shoes hanging from this tree the first time I played at Morley Field in 1984. It was just a few back then, compared to the hundreds or thousands up there until last Sunday. I don't remember ever hitting the shoe tree with my discs, even though it was only a few yards from the tee. Sometimes I'd walk by without even noticing it.
