Mike and Martin are collecting hydrogen gas in a 100-mL graduated tube. They're generating the gas using the reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium metal. This is a good way to figure out the value of the ideal gas law constant, which is the R in the famous equation, PV=nRT.
