26 October 2003
I woke up to the sight of billowing smoke in the eastern
and southern skies this morning. These were obviously not clouds, but
smoke from a fire that I later heard was in Ramona, a town at least 20-30
miles to the east of us. Little did I realize that the fire would race
through the brush and into the middle of San Diego within just a few hours.
We watched the skies darken and kept abreast of TV news reports of homes
being lost and fires jumping over 10-lane highways. Even with our windows
shut, our eyes and throats are burning, but we've been very lucky so far,
as the fires passed 10 or more miles to the east and south of us in its
path toward the southwest. Unfortunately, the fire ripped through the
communities of Scripps Ranch and Tierrasanta, and threatened businesses
in Kearny Mesa and homes in the Clairemont area as well. Other fires in
the Valley Center, Camp Pendleton, and Otay Lakes areas did significant
damage elsewhere in the county.
