17 - Meling Ranch

17 May 2008

We stayed at Meling Ranch from Friday evening through Monday morning. It's about an hour away from anywhere else, and a good 5-6 hour drive from home, south along the Mexican coast then a little more than an hour drive east into the mountains. The trip was organized by the Buena Vista Audubon Society and included 19 people, mostly avid birders, all of us hoping to see one of the California condors recently released into Sierra de San Pedro Mártir National Park. We drove up to the observatory at 9,200-feet elevation, but didn't see any condors today. From the top of the mountain, however, it was possible to see both the Pacific Ocean in the west and the Gulf of California in the east.
